On October 9, 1977,

For the 2nd year in succession‚ the Yanks score in the 9th inning of the 5th game to beat the Royals in the League Champioship Series. The Royals were three outs away from their first World Series apperance, Paul Splittorf went the first 7 innings and left with a 3-2 lead, Doug Bird and Steve Mingori held the lead. In the first inning, Ron Guidry gave up 2 runs when George Brett tripled in Hal McRae, and scored on a Al Cowens ground out.The Yankee's scracthed out a run with some two out bingo, as Mickey Rivers singles, steals second and Willie Randolph walks. Then Thurman Munson Singles to right to make it a 2-1 game.

In the top of the 3rd McRae scores again when Cowens singled him in. For the series McRae hit .444. The Royals lead 3-1. Mike Torrez relived Ron Guidry, and was the hero of this game as he pitched 5.1 scorless innings. 

The Yankees score 1 in the 8th, when Randolph singles to lead off inning and Reggie Jackson scores him with 1 out in the frame.

In the top of 9th the Yankees pull out a miricale scoring 3 times, Dennis Leonard comes in for the 9th, Paul Blair singles, Roy White Walks, Larry Gura comes in for a lefty vs Lefty match up and Mickey Rivers strokes a game tying single. Mark Little Comes in and Willie Randolph in the middle of it again hits a go ahead sacrifice fly. Rivers scores on a error by Brett making it 5-3,

Sparky Lyle closes out the Royals, on a ground out double play by Fred Patek, the Yankees win their second consecutive American League pennant. The Yankees will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
