Cy Young vs Christy Mathewson

In a game billed as a pitchers' duel...

Boston Rustlers (who became the Braves) Cy Young and the New York Giants' Christy Mathewson face each other for the first and only time, before 10,000 Boston fans, the largest crowd of the year. At the time the Rustlers were 47.5 games out of first place.

Young gives up three homers and nine runs in less than three innings. With a 9 - 0 Giants lead, Manager John McGraw lifts Mathewson who pitched just two innings, preferring to save his ace for the pennant race against Chicago and Philadelphia. This would end up being the only time the two pitchers ever face each other. The Giants coast to an 11–2 win.

Young would go on to make 2 more starts in his professional career, winning the next start 1-0 over Babe Adams and the Pittsburgh Pirates and losing his final apperenace 13-3.

Mathewson went on to pitch for 5 more seasons, and his Giant's did make 3 more World Series apperences, including in 1911 vs the Philadelphia A's. The Giant's, however, lost all 3 World Series apperences as Matty went 2 - 5 in his starts despite giving up a a total of 11 earned runs.

Between the two pitchers they had 884 career victories, 155 shut outs and 1,184 complete games.
