Preview: 2011 MLB Rule V Draft Player Pool

The 2011

MLB Rule V (“Five”) Draft is set to take place on December 8th in Dallas, Texas. To view all of the top players available in this year’s draft, check out Rule V Draft Tracker Page.

While most teams use the Rule V Draft to fill bench and bullpen spots, rebuilding clubs with more flexible rosters often take un-protected prospects and young, toolsy players.

In recent years, many teams have lucked out in the Rule V Draft, picking (future) All-Stars like Josh Hamilton, Joakim Soria, Johan Santana, Dan Uggla and Shane Victorino.

While the talent pool in this year’s draft isn’t especially strong, toolsy prospects like Jiwan James (Phillies), Nick Barnese (Rays), Angel Morales (Twins), Caleb Brewer (Braves) and Tim Alderson (Pirates) have star-powered ability and could pan out if given the chance. For clubs looking for fresh arms, sideshow projects like switch-pitching Yankees reliever Pat Venditte and 7’1? soft-tossing giant Loek Van Mil (Angels) along with hard-throwing lefties T.J. McFarland (Indians) and Philippe Valiquette (Mariners) lead a polished class of bullpen pieces that could fit the bill.
