1973 All-Star Game Has a San Francisco Giants Connection

Tonight the 83rd All-Star Game takes place in Kansas City with the American and National League battling it out for home-field advantage in the World Series. The last time the Midsummer Classic took place in Kansas City was in 1973 as the National League won 7-1. The game was the last All-Star appearance for San Francisco Giants legend and New York Met at the time Willie Mays. The "Say Hey Kid " who was traded to the Mets in May of 1972 made his final appearance in the game after racking up 24 All-Star berths from 1954-1973. Mays went 0-1 in the game striking out in his only at-bat.   The story of the game was Giants outfielder Bobby Bonds who was named MVP of the game going 2-2 with a double, two-run homer and two RBI's. 1973 was a great year for Bonds who hit a career-high 39 homers finishing third in the MVP voting and named the NL Player of the Year by the Sporting News. Bonds became the fourth Giant to win the award joining Mays in 1963, 1968, Juan Marichal 1965 and Willie McCovey in 1969. The 1973 game featured 18 future Hall of Famers and when we look back at the 2012 game years from now, how many future players will be in Cooperstown? There will be four Giants participating in tonight's game and which one will leave their mark.
