1994 Maddux: What If?

Did the 1994 MLB player’s strike prevent Greg Maddux from completing the greatest pitching season of all-time?

One of the darkest days in baseball history occurred on August 12, 1994 when the MLBPA walked out on strike, causing the remainder of the season to be cancelled.

For years, this baseball enthusiast has wondered if  “The Professor” lost out on the best season on the mound EVER.

The day before the strike, Maddux was at the height of his powers, dealing a 3-hit shutout in Denver using only 94 pitches.  This performance was typical for the right-hander during this era.

1994 Season Totals:

16-6 / 1.56 ERA / 25 GS / .896 WHIP / 202 IP / 150 H / 4 HR / 31 BB / 156 K / 10 CG

The most impressive part is logging 202 innings pitched in 25 starts.  That averages over eight innings per start.  Maddux also allowed only 4 home runs.

Let’s extrapolate out the season utilizing the Atlanta Braves entire schedule.  The team played 114 out of 162 games or 70.4% of the season.  Here’s what might have occurred:

23-9 / 1.56 ERA / 36 GS / .896 WHIP / 287.33 IP / 213 H / 6 HR / 44 BB / 222 K / 14 CG

This is highly possible considering Maddux followed up his 1994 campaign with a season that is regarded as one of the five best in MLB history.

Maddux combined 1994-95 totals are simply astonishing.

35-8/ 1.60 ERA/ 0.85 WHIP/ 411.67 IP/ 297 H/ 12 HR/ 54 BB/ 337 K/

Would the 1994 Maddux season rank number one on the all-time Factor12 Rating?  We can only ask, What If?
