Allen Webster Begins Career in Boston Red Sox Organization

One of the key players the Boston Red Sox received in the recent trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers was pitching prospect Allen Webster. Webster made his debut in the Red Sox organization last night in double-A Portland against New Hampshire.

His debut was not smooth sailing to say the least. Though he flashed signs of brilliance, Webster did have his struggles. The righty went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits. The bright spot in his statistical line was his strikeouts, which he racked up seven of.

Webster’s struggles came in his first two innings of work. After the Sea Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Webster got himself into a bases-loaded jam, but managed to escape only giving up one run. He had more trouble in the second inning in which he gave up two more runs. After the second inning, he closed out his night by retiring six of the final seven batters he faced. He left the game in a 3-3 tie and received a no decision.

Webster threw 80 pitches in his outing, with 46 of them being strikes. One of his biggest attributes is his ability to strike batters out. Prior to being traded to the Red Sox, Webster made 27 appearances for double-A Chattanooga where he struck out 117 batters in 121.2 innings of work.

At 22, Webster is a pitcher that the Red Sox could find valuable in the future. He entered the season as the number two prospect in the Dodgers organization and in portions of his start last night, it was clear why. If Webster lives up to expectations, the “mega-deal” could prove to be more than just salary relief for the Red Sox.
