"QUESTION" - "can you name me baseball's highest-ever, TV rated, World Series Game?" ( Answer at the bottom - don't look ).......
Its not the first 2 Games of this year's World Series between the Giants and Tigers. This year's the worst ever - down 13% from last year which was "the worst."
Predictably Fox, the Network carrying the games, attempted to put a positive spin on things by saying Game 1 ratings were good enough to win the night against rival networks. Fox said the big early-lead by the Giants sent viewers fleeing from the broadcast. They claimed at the start the game was actually out-rating last year's opening, but once the Giants pulled ahead 6-0, the numbers started "dwindling."
Game one highlighted the Giants power with third baseman Pablo Sandoval slamming three home runs in three times at bat. That feat even triggered a Tweet from President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela praising his home grown boy joining the exclusive club of Babe Ruth - Reggie Jackson - and Albert Pujols. Each hit 3 home runs in World Series competition.
Last night in Game 2 we again watched Giant pitching shut down Detroit's power hitters. The Tigers were beat on a two-hit performance by Giant pitching, 2-0, as the teams move to Detroit and Game 3. The World Series resume Saturday night from Detroit's Comerica Park.
From a baseball fan's point of view, Game 1 and Game 2 have been exciting to watch. We've seen good pitching by both teams, even though Detroit's come out on the short end. We've seen a bunch of players on the San Francisco Giants cutting up, having fun, playing the games like they were still school kids on their high school teams determined to win the State or Regional title. The Giants are playing "loose." Detroit on the other hand look "tentative." Look a bit "timid. " In my opinion, they're not displaying confidence they can beat this Giants team.
While this World Series lacking viewers, Fox must be complimented for technical brilliance. The networks using 40 camera's at both parks, including five that use super-slow motion technology to provide staggering images never before seen on television. The cameras slow down the action and provide intriguing views of baseball physics. During Game 1 viewers saw extraordinary images of Pablo Sandoval's bat action on his historic three home runs. Baseball officials and television executives are wondering what it will take to increase television ratings for the sport's "marquee" event - the World Series.
How's your "trivia" knowledge? What was the most watched World Series game on television? The most watched World Series event on television was Game 6 of the 1980 match-up between the Kansas City Royals and Philadelphia Phillies on NBC. The game was called by Joe Garagiola - Tony Kubek - Tom Seaver - The Phillies claimed their first world championship with a 4-1 victory. NBC picked up a television audience of millions with a 40.0 rating (60 share). A "huge" audience.
Expect this years World Series to go in the history-books as the "least" viewed because, according to experts, "NO ONE'S WATCHING"..............By Larry Upton
