Can Melancon close in the AL East? What's next?

Most reports I read seem to think that Melancon can't close for the Red Sox and I can't really disagree. Of all the sources below, only Ben Cherington (Red Sox GM) is the only one who thinks he can close for the Red Sox. It's even reported that they are still in on Andrew Bailey.

Jon Heyman tweets "melancon nice pickup for #redsox. cant be their closer, tho. they still need someone for the 9th." @JonHeymanCBS

Pete Abraham tweets "Covered Melancon in NY. Power arm, tough-minded guy. I'd project him more as a set-up guy in the AL, not the closer." @PeteAbe

Buster Olney tweets "The Red Sox landed Mark Melancon, but they are continuing their pursuit of other relievers, including Andrew Bailey." @Buster_ESPN

Keith Law writes on ESPN Insider that the Red Sox lost the trade. He doesn't love Melancon's stuff and think Jed Lowrie alone will have a higher WAR.

Jon Morosi tweets "With Mark Melancon trade, #RedSox have more to spend on rotation. They are still interested in Roy Oswalt, sources say." @jonmorosi

Alex Speier tweets "Good opportunity for Weiland, who was ticketed for Triple-A w/ #redsox, and Lowrie, who was blocked now by Scutaro and in future by Iglesias" @alexspeier

Rob Bradford tweets "Cherington on Melancon: 'We think has intangibles to succeed in the American League East ... We definitely feel he's capable of closing'" @bradfo

The trade did open up some money but the Red Sox quickly replaced Lowrie with Nick Punto. Morosi mentioned that the Red Sox could now be looking to spend on a starting pitcher.

Jon Heyman tweets "nick punto agrees to #redsox deal" @JonHeymanCBS

Jon Heyman tweets "hearing punto will get about $3.5M for 2 years from boston." @JonHeymanCBS

Jim Bowden tweets "Nick Punto signs with the Red Sox for 2-year $3m deal...Sox chasing Joe Saunders next" @JimBowdenESPNxm

Nick Cafardo tweets "Jason Varitek may still be in the picture for the Red Sox according to a major league source." @nickcafardo

Lastly, we hear that the Red Sox could still have interest in Varitek. I don't see how they can fit him on the roster. The Red Sox aren't necessarily deep at catcher but their roster is set at the position.
