Rays extend Matt Moore

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that the Rays have extended Matt Moore.

The deal is for five years, $14 million guaranteed with multiple options that could total eight years $37.5 million. This deal will buy out two of Moore's free agent years.

Crasnikc writes "Moore, a 23-year-old left-hander, has emerged as one of the elite young prospects in baseball. He went 12-3 with a 1.92 ERA in 27 starts for Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham this season, striking out 210 batters and walking only 46 in 155 innings. Late in the minor league season, ESPN Baseball Insider Keith Law ranked Moore as the No. 2 prospect in the game, behind Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper."

We've seen this strategy work for the Rays before. In the past we've seen them lock up Baldelli, Crawford, Shields, and most famously, Evan Longoria.

The Rays expect to have a really good young rotation next year lead by David Price, Shields, Hellickson, Moore and Davis.  They also have Niemann was has been rumored in deals this offseason.

Jon Heyman tweets that the Rays could make an offer to Ivan Rodriguez. "just heard from my great neighbor pudge. hes working out hard in miami. #rays, maybe #mets among possibilities for ivan" @Jon_Heyman
