Rockies give up on their biggest draft bust
The Colorado Rockies finally admitted their failure - kind of. They traded Greg Reynolds, once the second overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, to Texas for Chad Tracy, a AAA infielder, who happens to be the son of manager Jim Tracy.
A big day in the Tracy household and in the Rockies' front office.
The Rockies will tell you Reynolds was ruined by injuries most and ineffectiveness second. The truth is he was a draft mistake the minute they decided they were going to select him over elite prospects Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw and Evan Longoria.
To his credit, Reynolds did pitch some outstanding games in the majors but since those starts were so few no one remembers them.
The final tally from that draft disaster?
A record of 5-8 with a 7.47 ERA, with 40 strikeouts and 36 walks in 94 innings, covering 27 games and 16 starts.
The Rockies have witnessed what became of Lincecum, Kershaw and Longoria. One of those players - Kershaw - could wind up in the Hall of Fame and one more - Lincecum, if his body holds up, could be special for years. Longoria is an All-Star talent.
