As Trade Deadline Looms, It May Be End of an Era for Phillies

Phillies Centerfielder Shane Victorino is in the final year of his contract with the Phillies. Could he be used as trade bait to help the team re-build?

It will be a different team that takes the team against the Washington Nationals tomorrow evening. The next time the Philadelphia Phillies take the field, the Tuesday 4PM non-waiver trade deadline will have passed. As such, there may be a couple familiar faces missing in the dugout and on the field.

After being swept by the Braves yesterday, it is reasonable to assume that Phillies will enter sell off mode for the first time in a long time.

In fact, the rumors have already started as a station in San Francisco is reporting that the Giants have a deal in place with the Phillies for Hunter Pence. Giants ownership is denying the rumor, but it wouldn’t be the first time someone has denied a rumor that was true.

Ultimately the players who may be missing when play resumes have been well chronicled in this space. Names like Pence, Victorino, Pierre, Blanton, Wiggington, and even Jimmy Rollins and Cliff Lee were the subject of some speculation a week or two ago.

There’s only one thing for certain… At 4PM tomorrow, it’s quite possible that players who have been keys in this golden age of Phillies baseball won’t be here anymore.

The performance of this team as a whole is to blame for the changes about to sweep through, but still you can’t help thinking back to how sweet a ride it has been.

This could be the beginning of the end of an era.
