Trevor Bauer to make his major league debut

Trevor Bauer, the former UCLA standout who was the No. 3 pick in last year's draft, will make his debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday against the Atlanta Braves.

Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday the 21-year-old right-hander will be called up from triple-A Reno and join the team on Wednesday.

Bauer is 4-0 with a 2.82 earned-run average in eight starts at Reno. He was 7-1 with a 1.68 ERA at double-A Mobile.


The Texas Rangers have placed right-hander Colby Lewis on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his forearm. The move is retroactive to Sunday and the Rangers promoted left-handed prospect Martin Perez from triple-A Round Rock for the first time to take Lewis' roster spot. Lewis, 32, is 6-6 with a 3.51 ERA in 15 starts this season since making the team's opening-day start. In his last outing, Lewis gave up 12 hits and eight runs, seven of them earned, in four innings. ... The Colorado Rockies are reassigning pitching coach Bob Apodaca to special assistant to general managerDan O'Dowd at Apodaca's request. Apodaca approached O'Dowd on Tuesday and asked for the change, Rockies Manager Jim Tracy said. Bullpen coach Jim Wright and triple-A pitching coach Bo McLaughlin will serve as co-pitching coaches for the remainder of the season. ... The New York Yankees have claimed right-hander Danny Farquhar off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and optioned him to double-A Trenton. Farquhar, 25, has played for the Toronto and Oakland organizations this season. He was 1-3 with a 4.46 ERA with triple-A Sacramento. ... The Chicago Cubsrecalled first baseman Anthony Rizzo from triple-A Iowa and put him in the No. 3 spot in the batting order for his Chicago debut against the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
