Who can I turn to?

Who can I turn to?

Who can I turn to?

Baseball began early this year, in Japan on March 28tth. It's only May and many of the premier teams, the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Tampa Bay and others are struggling because of injuries. The New York Yankees hit hard with the loss of baseball's greatest closer, Mariano Rivera, out for the rest of the season and possibly out of baseball for good. Trading deadlines July 31st. Clubs have players they would love to dump for a variety of reasons but high salaries makes it tough to get rid of them. The Red Sox would love to dump Josh Beckett but they would have to eat half his salary. Beckett's still considered a top-line hurler but he's a pain in the ass in the clubhouse. He's been a major part of Bobby Valentine's internal problems with Red Sox players, the so-call ring leader of malcontents on Boston's roster. He led the group at the end of last season sitting in the clubhouse during games eating fried chicken and drinking beer. So we have injuries and high salaries of malcontents raising hell in MLB clubhouses.

"WHO CAN I TURN TO?" seems to be the song of all MLB General Manager's as they head to mid-season, the All-Star break Tuesday night July 10th at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri. The St.Louis Cardinals, winner's of last years World Series against Texas, dealt a serious blow over the weekend when their star slugger Lance Berkman suffered a serious knee injury in a game against the Dodgers. He has a torn ACL. Similar to the injury that's placed the Yankees Mariano Rivera on the side lines for the rest of this season. With Berkman out, chances of St.Louis repeating a World Series win just vanished.

Here's a small sampling of player's GM's will have to find replacements for if they expect to compete for play-off spots in the American League.

Boston Red Sox - Three key players on the 60 day Disable List
Jacoby Ellsbury--Carl Crawford - John Lackey - with Cody Ross going "day by day."

New York Yankees - Seven players on the 60 day DL list.
Caesar Cabral - Joba Chamberlain - Mariano Rivera out for entire season.

Tampa Bay Rays - Four players on 60 day DL
Evan Longoria, their biggest star on DL for 60 days because of a torn left ham string. Longoria's the team leader, his injury seriously cripples Tampa Bay as Rivera's loss cripples the Yankees.

Add the Tigers losing Victor Martinez, and the National League St.Louis Cardinals losing Lance Berkman, you can understand why GM's and team managers are singing a song written in 1965 by England's actor - singer - songwriter Anthony Newley, called, "WHO CAN I TURN TO?" MLB's biggest question of the young season
