Don Black
On September 13, 1948, while at the plate, Don Black suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and collapsed. He was in critical condition for days, but eventually recovered. His baseball career, however, was over. The tall right-handed pitcher had posted a 34-55 record in six big league seasons, spent with the Athletics and Indians. Cleveland owner Bill Veeck staged a benefit night for Black, raising more than $40,000 for him.
