Brian Downing
The bespectacled Brian Downing didn't look like a ballplayer, and early in his career it seemed he was destined for a brief stay as a journeyman catcher. But after his trade to the Angels in 1977, he blossomed, developing into a top-notch catcher, and later, a slugging outfielder/DH who enjoyed his best seasons after the age of 31. By keeping his body in great shape through weight-lifting, Downing defied the decline of age and played regularly until he was 41 years old. He set several career records for the Angels and was one of their most popular players.
