Injuries and Explanation for Missed Playing Time
Ford underwent surgery on his right knee in November of 1979. He did not appear in any spring training games for the Angels in 1980, but was in the lineup for the opener. After spending his spring rehabbing the knee in virtual privacy, he hit a home run and a double on opening day.
