Pud Galvin
The premier strikeout pitcher of the early 1880s, James "Pud" Galvin was a rubber-armed hurler who finished 94% of his starts. He won more than 300 games in his career with several mediocre teams, winning 20 games ten times. In the days of one-man pitching staffs, Galvin paced his league in strikeouts on four occasions and pitched two no-hit games.

Galvin was known as "The Little Steam Engine," and "Gentle Jeems." Apparently the nickname "Pud" was short for "pudding," and was placed on Galvin by admiring fans in St. Louis.
