Ruben Gomez

One newspaper described Puerto Rican pitcher Ruben Gomez as a "temperamental Latin who insists he can't get a proper grip on the ball unless the weather is hot." Gomez's temper was often hot throughout his checkered 10-year career. Depending on who you talked to, his teammates or opposing batters, he was either wild or a headhunter. He was involved in several beanball controversies, and he battled his managers, who never seemed to share his lofty opinion of his ability to pitch in big games. After nine seasons in the majors, Gomez pitched in the Mexican League for four years before briefly resurfacing with the Phillies at the age of 39 in 1967. His biggest moment came when he won Game Three of the 1954 World Series.
