Charlie Grimm
Spending more than two decades in a Chicago Cubs' uniform as a player and manager, Charlie Grimm guided the team to four pennants. As a player, he was a marvelous defensive first baseman, ranging far to his right for grounders and scooping throws from the dirt with his small mitt. A laid-back "player's manager," Grimm took the Cubs to four World Series, but never won the title. His last season in a Chicago uniform was 1960, but he soon settled in as a broadcaster and front office, staying close to the game that had been his life.

As manager of the Cubs, Grimm had a running feud with (AL) umpire George Moriarty in the 1935 World Series. Moriarty, a former manager of the Tigers, made several calls in the Series that went against the Cubs. Grimm was ejected in Game Three after furiously reacting to one of Moriarty's calls. Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis stepped in and tried to soothe the bad feelings, but Moriarty and Grimm clashed again later in the Series, which Detroit won in six games.
