Andy Hawkins
A big, right-handed high school pitcher out of Texas, Andy Hawkins was the San Diego Padres first round draft pick in the 1978 amateur draft. Four years later he was in the Padres starting rotation, but despite having some marquee moments, he never wuite lived up to his billing. In spite of his size, Hawkins was not a strikeout pitcher, and batters put the ball in play frequently against him. Subsequently he usually was among league leaders in hits and home runs allowed. In 1985 he became the first pitcher in years to win his first 10 starts, and in 1990 he tossed a no-hitter, but lost the game 4-0 when his Yankee teammates committed three errors and were shut out by three White Sox hurlers.

Post-Season Notes
Hawkins was the odd man out in the Padres staff when they reached the post-season in 1984. Manager Dick Williams selected to use starting pitchers Eric Show, Tim Lollar, Ed Whitson, and Mark Thurmond in the NLCS and World Series. Hawkins made six appearances and performed very well out of the bullpen, allowing just one earned run and four hits in 15 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, his fellow starters were blasted in the World Series by the Tigers to the tune of a 13.58 ERA in five starts. Whitson failed to get out of the first inning of his only start, Lollar was knocked out in the second frame of his, and Show was knocked out in the third inning of his start. Thurmond went five innings in Game One, but was knocked out in Game Five in the opening inning, having retired just one batter.
