Stan Hollmig
Stan "Hondo" Hollmig was one of the many bonus babies who didn't pan out. The slugging outfielder was signed off the campus of Texas A&M University by the Phillies for $25,000. After a solid first season in professional ball with Wilmington in the Inter-State League in 1948, the Phillies placed him on their 40-man big league roster to protect him from being drafted by other teams. The move proved to be unnecessary. Hollmig hit poorly in half a season with the Phillies in 1949 and played terribly in the outfield, which was his biggest flaw. After a few more seasons in pro ball, which included two more cups of coffee with Philadelphia, Hollmig was out of the game and returned to the Lone Star State.
