La Marr Hoyt

The winner of the 1983 American League Cy Young Award, LaMarr Hoyt was an unlikely pitching ace. Overweight much of his career, Hoyt relied on a nasty sinker and off-speed stuff to fool batters. Off the field he was an everyman, preferring blue jeans and pickup trucks to suits and airplane travel. He was one of the best interviews of his era, which meant his locker was usually full of reporters following one of his starts. After four straight seasons of double-digit wins, he was arrested for drugs, suspended by baseball for one full year, and eventually out of baseball at the age of 31. He served two prison terms for drug convictions.
