Fielder Jones
Fielder Jones managed the Chicago White Sox to the most surprising upset in World Series history. As a player/manager, His "Hitless Wonder" team defeated the heavily-favored Cubs in the 1906 World Series, behind the streangth of their pitching staff. As a player, Jones was a masterful center fielder, excellent bunter and baserunner, and a savage competitior. He hit over .300 six times, and is credited with executing the first unassisted double play in the American League by an outfielder. Seemingly always disappointed in what he considered lackadaisacal efforts by his players, Jones would annually retire from his post, only to be bribed back by owner Charles Comiskey. Eventually he left the game to become a forester in Oregon, where he became quite wealthy.
Quotes From Jones
"The Sox are too proud to take anyone's leavings. If we cannot be first, we care not for second, which is but the anteroom to oblivion." Fielder Jones, in 1907

As a Manager
The game that will forever haunt Fielder Jones as a manger occured on October 6, 1908. In a virtual tie with the Tigers for first place, Jones gave the ball to Doc White instead of Frank Smith. White was pummeled by the Tigers and the pennant was lost. Critics cited a fued between Jones and Smith as the reason the pitcher was not used. Regardless of his motive, Jones retired following the season. He was coaxed back to the dugout to skipper the St. Louis Terriers in the Federal League six years later, and put in a couple of years at the helm of the Browns before retiring for good to his home in Oregon.
