Gabe Kapler
Gabe Kapler's sculpted body landed him on the covers of muscle magazines well before he established himself as a valuable role player. Born in Hollywood, California, Kapler's movie-star looks made him popular in the many cities he played. A streaky hitter with raw skills, Kapler started in center field for the final game at Tiger Stadium and wore a uniform without a number in honor of Detroit legend Ty Cobb.

Quotes From Kapler
"I was selected in the draft as someone to fill out a Minor League roster - that's where you are when you go in the 57th round. I became a top prospect and then an everyday player before becoming a bench player and even a player who has had to go into Spring Training to win a job." — Gabe Kapler speaking of his qualifications to be a minor league manager, having been at all levels of the major leagues

As a Manager
Kapler retired at the age of 31 in 2007 and accepted a job as manager of Boston's Class-A farm team, the Greensville (SC) Drive. "I want to contribute to the Boston Red Sox and to the game of baseball," Kapler explained, "and I think I can do that as a manager who has the responsibility for a team that is composed of young men trying to reach the big leagues."

Injuries and Explanation for Missed Playing Time
On September 14, 2005, Kapler was on first base when teammate Tony Graffinino belted a home run. As Kapler rounded second base, he tripped on the carpet and ruptured his Achilles tendon. As he lay on the ground in pain, Graffinino waited on second base, making sure not to pass Kapler. A pinch-runner was needed to complete the play, as Kapler was helped from the field. Kapler's season was over.
