Slugger Frank Howard enjoyed tremendous success against McDowell. In 68 at-bats, he hit five homers and hit .368, with a .706 SLG mark and 25 walks. On a few occasions, McDowell's managers switched him to another position when Howard came to the plate, replacing him with a reliever, only to return Sam to the mound after Howard's place in the order was passed.
