Quotes About Andy Pafko
"The pitcher who has Pafko, Snider, and Furillo in the outfield behind him should do nothing but make the opposition hit in the air and watch the trio go get them." — Stan Baumgartner, The Sporting News, June 27, 1951
Pafko's Greatest Thrill in the Big Leagues
"It was 1945 and the Cubs were battling for the pennant. It was the next-to-the-last week of the season and the Pirates were at Wrigley Field. It was a Saturday and the fans were giving me a day. My mother and father had come down from Wisconsin to see me play. My mother had never seen me play before. I never wanted to hit one so much in my life. Preacher Roe was pitching for the Pirates. My first time up I found the bases loaded. I guess I was trying to hard, because Preach struck me out. But I was lucky. I got another chance. The next time up the situation was exactly the same. The bases were loaded again.
"This time I didn't miss.I hit one into the stands and I don't think I'll ever have another thrill like that one. Looking back now, it's even bigger. Because that was the only time my mother ever saw me play. She'd never seen me play before and she was never to see me again. She died a couple of years ago without ever getting another chance."

Scouting Report
"Andy Pafko is a fellow you should see around the big league circles for quite some time. Last season he was about everything in the PC League - Most Valuable; batting champ; RBI leader; most hits; most total bases - and what have you? Andy played every game for Los Angeles; BA .358; RBI 116. He came to the Cubs for 13 games and did nothing but make 22 hits in 58 times at bat for a major league average of .379 (and 10 RBI)." — 1944 edition of Who's Who in the Major Leagues

June 15, 1951: Traded by the Chicago Cubs with Johnny Schmitz, Wayne Terwilliger, and Rube Walker to the Brooklyn Dodgers for Bruce Edwards, Joe Hatten, Eddie Miksis, and Gene Hermanski.
When this deal was made, the experts famously cried "[Cub General Manager] Wid Matthews gave the pennant to the Dodgers!"
