Dan Quisenberry

Dan Quisenberry
Dan Quisenberry continued the submarine success of Kent Tekulve, carrying the torch for relievers with a delivery from down under. Utilizing his pinpoint control, "Quiz" led the American League in saves five times in six years, with a peak of 45 in 1983. He finished no lower than third in AL Cy Young Award voting in four straight seasons (1982-1985), and also garnered five Rolaids Relief Man Awards.

Quotes From Quisenberry
"Natural grass is a wonderful thing for little bugs and sinkerball pitchers."

"Our fielders have to catch a lot of balls, or at least deflect them to someone who can."

"I found a delivery in my flaw."

Best Season: 1984
Without Quisenberry, the 1984 Kansas City Royals probably would have finished fourth. Instead, they won their fifth division title in nine years. Quiz pitched 129 1/3 innings in 72 games, saving a league-high 44 while posting a sparkling 2.64 ERA. He walked only 12 batters all year. He lost the American League Cy Young Award to Willie Hernandez, another closer having a big season. The fact is, Quisenberry was more valuable to his team than Hernandez was to Detroit.
