Rip's Hidden Resin Bag Lifted by Umpire Conlan
PHILADELPHIA, PA. — With all the deftness of a magician lifting a rabbit from a hat, Umpire Jocko Conlan reached into the hip pocket of Pitcher Rip Sewell of the Pirates here, September 15, and pulled out a hidden resin bag. The rules provide the resin bag may be kept near the mound, but not in a pitcher's pocket.
Sewell, who was on the mound in the eleventh with the bases loaded with Phillies and the Pirates ahead, 5 to 4, violently resented Conlan's sleight-of-hand performance. A hot argument ensued, but it was broken up when Coach Spud Davis of the Pirates came out on the field and notified the umpire that Nick Strincevich would replace Sewell on the mound. Some of the fans thought Rip had been banished, but he had walked two batters and pitched three balls to the third, so his exit was logical.
Strincevich pithed another ball, forcing in the tying run, and Johnny Wyrostek then singled to drive in the counter that gave the Phils a 6 to 5 victory.
