Ruben Sierra

When Ruben Sierra arrived in the big leagues in 1986 as a 20-year old, he reminded people of Roberto Clemente. A product of Puerto Rico, Sierra belted 30 homers and drove in 100 runs in his sophomore season, and enjoyed great success with Texas in his first six seasons. But after leaving the Rangers, the switch-hitting Sierra struggled with injuries and never found a home for long with one team. Partly because of his back problems, Sierra had just one season after the age of 27 where he played as many as 127 games. Late in his career, he served as a bat-for-hire, helping the Yankees to the post-season in 1995, and returning to the Bronx for three seasons in a role as Joe Torre's part-time DH and pinch-hitter. In that capacity, Sierra continued to provide clutch hits and slug homers, including 17 in just over 300 at-bats at the age of 38 in 2004.
