Miguel Tejada
When he was just 17 years old, Miguel Tejada was inked to a contract by Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal. By the time he was 22, Tejada was the starting shortstop for the Oakland A's, having traveled a long uphill path from his native Dominican Republic, where he was born into severe poverty. With a short, potent swing, the popular Tejada drove in 100 or more runs for five straight seasons, including an amazing 150 in 2004. He was named the American League Most Valuable Player in 2002, and helped the A's to four consecutive playoff appearances before leaving for big free agent dollars in Baltimore.
Quotes About Tejada
"There's no use broaching that. That's Miggy's call. When Miggy says he wants a day off, he'll get the day off. He knows that if he ever wants to DH sometime, he should try to get to me a day or two before so I can maneuver the lineup and work it out for him." Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo, on Miguel Tejada's consecutive games streak, May 20, 2007
