George Van Haltren

A leadoff hitter with excellent speed and decent power, George Van Haltren was a star center fielder for the New York Giants in the 1890s. A former pitcher, Van Haltren had a powerful left arm and routinely recorded 20 or more assists in a season despite his reputation as a rocket-thrower. He hit .316 in his 17-year major league career and logged another six seasons in the Pacific Coast League after an ankle injury limited his mobility. His 2,532 hits are among the most of any player in the 19th century who is not in the Hall of Fame.
