Carl Weilman

Standing nearly six-feet, six-inches tall, pitcher Carl Weilman held two distinctions, one embarrassing and the other peculiar. In one game in 1913, he struck out six times, setting a major league record. Strangely, throughout his career, which featured a 85-95 record made entirely for the lowly Browns, the left-hander stymied the hard-hitting Tigers and Ty Cobb, defeating them seven consecutive times at one point.

The Tiger Tamer
Weilman handcuffed the Detroit Tigers, especially left-handed sluggers Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford. From 1914-1916, he posted a 13-4 mark against the Bengals, who werre one of the best hitting clubs in baseball. Tiger owner Frank Navin later recalled how he missed signing Weilman for himself.

"I remember years ago one of our scouts, after watching the Maysville, Ky., team, strongly recommended that we buy a young battery that was running up a brilliant record in the Blue Grass country," Navin said.

"We snapped up the chance, paying $2,500 each for the two recruits. On the same team at the time was a lanky pitcher named Carl Weilman. He was grabbed shortly afterword by the St. Louis Browns and beat us out of the pennant two or three times. I can't even remember the names of the pitcher and catcher we bought.... But I'll never forget Weilman and neither will any of the Tigers who faced him in crucial games. [He] had some sort of jinx on us, as he wasn't particularly effective against the other clubs. He earned his salary, though, winning from Detroit."
