One publication wrote, in 1944: "Whatever was wrong with the Cubs last year, no one knows. Jim had good ball players who didn't do good playing. He will have to fight criticism and razzyberrying as a result, but can silence dissenters this season with a winning club."
After guiding the Cubs to a 1-9 start in '44, Wilson was fired. The team was in the World Series the following year.
