The 1918 Chicago Cubs captured the National League pennant by a comfortable 10.5 games with an 84-45 record under the direction of manager Fred Mitchell. However, the Cubs fell to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, four games to two, and through 2010 are still seeking their first championship since 1908.

Shortstop Charlie Hollocher had 26 stolen bases to go along with a .316 batting average as the offensive catalyst and first baseman Fred Merkle drove in a team-high 65 runs. Pitching was the team's strength, paced by Hippo vaughn (22-10, 1.74 ERA). Lefty Tyler (19-8, 2.00) and Claude Hendrix (20-7, 2.78) also enjoyed dominant seasons.
