The 1919 Cincinnati Reds -- the "other" team in the 1919 World Series -- won the National League pennant, then went on to win the Series, five games to three. The team's accomplishments were overshadowed by the subsequent Black Sox scandal, when it was discovered that their American League opponents, the Chicago White Sox had tried to lose the series.

Despite winning 96 games in the regular season, the Reds had six regulars who batted .276 or lower. The Reds' offensive star was Edd Roush, who won the NL batting title with a .321 average. Heinie Groh hit .310 and finished fourth. Pitchers Hod Eller and Dutch Ruether both won 19 games, helping the Reds to finish nine games ahead of the New York Giants.
